What would you like to be?

Papini, Arianna Traduzione: Jon Brokenbrow

Fish, owl, crocodile? Wild or tame, all of them want to be other different animals, in this linked and round story about the power of imagination.

‘What would you like to be?’ is a picture book for early readers that is built from a repetitive narrative structure and adding characters chained together. Rebeca dreams of being a fish, the fish would like to be an owl, the owl admires the qualities of the crocodile... and so on with other domestic and wild animals, until a circular ending that leads readers to a wise conclusion: imagination allows us to be whatever we want. Arianna Papini presents a simple narrative approach that is combined with flat, schematic illustrations in soft colours and textures created using the collage technique. The result is a complete reading that, between one page and another, introduces visual clues to make us part of the creative game. From the fantastic union of two characters, original hybrids emerge: a fish with legs, an owl with fins, a crocodile with wings... configuring a peculiar animalarium that can continue beyond the pages of the book.
